Jewelry Glossary

Jewelry: Objects designed for the adornment of the body, such as bracelets, necklaces or rings, made with metals and set with precious or semiprecious stones.

Italian Charms: Interlocking links that can be hooked together to form a bracelet, keychain or other accessories. The individual pieces (an Italian charm) are available as enamel hand-painted, stainless steel with laser letters and photo charms and are compatible across most major brands. Available in small, medium, large and mega sizes. The standard charm size is 9mm.

Licensed Italian Charms: Authentic images of licensed characters and trademarks featured on Italian charms.

Modular links: Individual stainless steel pieces that hook together and can be moved to form a changeable look. See also; Italian Charms.

Italian Charm Bracelet: A bracelet made up of a series of flat, modular links that are hooked together (Italian charms). A piece of personalized jewelry is formed by linking individual charms on this stretchy band bracelet. The bracelets can easily be changed by replacing all or one piece at a time. Each Italian charm bracelet is totally unique since you put it together!

Brooches: A decorative pin or clasp offered in many styles and designs.

Rings: Circular jewelry pieces often featuring a stone centerpiece of either precious stone or semi-precious.

Pendants: An ornament or piece of jewelry that hangs from a necklace or bracelet.

Earrings: Literally "rings for the ears", these ornaments or jewels are attached to the earlobe with a clasp or through piercing.

Stainless Steel: This hearty steel with added chromium is resistant to scratches and corrosion.

925 Sterling Silver: Sterling silver must contain a minimum of 92.5% pure silver which is known as 925. The term is a measure of purity and quality.

Enamel: A paint that dries to a hard, glossy finish.

Standard Charm: A 9mm sized modular link (Italian charm) is considered the standard size in Italian Charms.

Mega Charm: An 18mm sized modular link (Italian charms).

Solder: To fuse two pieces of metal together using heat.

Acrylic Gemstones: Manufactured gemstones made from acrylic, a glassy material.

Cubic Zirconia: Also known as CZ, this synthetic gemstone is used to replicate the appearance of diamond. Despite its similarities, CZ has fewer flaws and more clarity than the diamond. CZ stones are available in a variety of colors as well as clear.

Gemstone cuts: The shape, proportions and finish of a polished gemstone. See list of gemstone cuts.

Cabachon: A gemstone fashioned with a domed or convex smooth and polished surface.

Rhinestones: A colorless synthetic gemstone made from paste or glass and designed to glitter with likeness to the diamond.

Abalone: The colorful, pearly iridescent inner shell of the mollusk characterized by dark green coloring. The lining is used to create jewelry, buttons and other accessories.

Mother of Pearl: a subtly iridescent inner shell of the mollusk characterized by pale coloring and pearly hues.

Semi-precious stones: A gem having commercial value but not as rare or expensive as a precious stone.

Birthstones: Birthstones (birthstone) are assigned through both zodiac sign and birth month. In ancient myth and astrology, birthstones were described as objects bringing power and luck to the wearer. They also were known to promote emotional, physical and spiritual healing.
